The first District One rankings — note they are “unofficial” — were released Tuesday.
If the season were to end today, Garnet Valley would earn the No. 4 seed in the Class AAAA tournaments. In addition, Marple Newtown (13), Strath Haven (15) and Haverford (16) would be at home in the opener. Penn Wood (18), Radnor (23) and Interboro (30) would open on the road.
It’s worth noting that, for at least this season, every team in the Central League is a Class AAAA team. Marple and Radnor moved up from Class AAA, leaving Sun Valley as the only Delco team still in AAA. Speaking of which, the Vanguards were ranked No. 3.
In Class A, Delco Christian is the third-ranked team.
District One basketball is using a power-point system similar (yet more simplistic) to how football calculates its standings. There is a heavy emphasis on strength of schedule — meaning the more Class AAAA and Class AAA teams one schedules, the better.
If you’re new to this points system thing, you can read about the method of seeding here.
