Girls Basketball: Super 7, Jan. 13

Here’s the latest girls basketball Super 7, through Sunday, Jan. 12. Note that we will have a second Super 7 update this week in Thursday’s Daily Times, along with the first girls basketball notebook.

1. Bonner Prendergast (9-1): Preview Rank: 1

The Pandas keep rolling along as they prepare to take on rival Cardinal O’Hara Tuesday night in a game that will make or break their standing as the No. 1 team in Delco. The “Big Three” of guards Sarah and Alyssa Monaghan and power forward Shalina Miller give Prendie the best combo of skill and size in the county. But can they keep the good times going against O’Hara?

2. Cardinal O’Hara (8-3): Previous Rank: 2

Perhaps the Lions are starting to find their footing after a so-so start that included losses to Ches-Mont League power West Chester Rustin and Catholic League juggernaut Neumann-Goretti. They defeated Rancocas Valley (N.J.) at the Philadelphia University Play by Play Classic thanks to a Mia Farmer runner as time was winding down in regulation, and also secured convincing wins earlier in the week against Conwell-Egan and Little Flower.

3. Garnet Valley (13-1): Previous Rank: 4

The Jaguars are the best team in the Central League, but as we’ve seen all season, sometimes reputation means very little. In the Central, parity has run rampant,  but the Jags remain undefeated and thus, the team to beat. Madison and Jordan Ireland, Macy Goldbach, Haley Warden and Sam Tomasetti give the Jags a formidable starting lineup. The schedule stiffens for GV starting this week, when they host Haverford (8-4) and reigning champs Radnor (6-6) on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Ridley (8-3) awaits them next Wednesday in the first of the teams’ two meetings.

4. Archbishop Carroll (5-5): Previous Rank: 3

The Patriots have losses against St. Anthony (N.Y.), Neumann-Goretti and, most recently on Saturday, Sanford (Del.). Those teams have a combined 30-3 record. The Patriots annually play an extremely difficult schedule, and this season is no different.

5. Episcopal Academy (5-3): Previous Rank: N/A

The Churchwomen seemed to be hitting their stride before a slip-up against New Jersey power Shabazz on Saturday. We’ll see how they fare against Germantown Academy, which appears to be the top team in the Inter-Ac League.

6. Ridley (9-3): Previous Rank: 5

The Green Raiders need a win in the worst way this week after two straight league losses (Upper Darby and Conestoga). Standouts Marykate Rumbaugh and Bree Mulhern are being counted on to right the ship.

7. Penn Wood (8-3): Previous Rank: 6

The Patriots staked their claim in the Del Val League last week with victories against Interboro and Chester, and capped off an impressive week with a lopsided win over Penncrest on Saturday.
