Soccer: A dour day for Delco in District One

It wasn’t until the final kick of Tuesday night that Delaware County had a winner to hang its hat on in the District One Class AAA fields for girls and boys. Eight teams entered, and only via Ridley, thanks to Jonah Schiavo’s penalty-kick clincher in the shootout against North Penn, did Delco emerge with a win. (Video of his goal here.)

For the boys, Strath Haven enjoyed a halftime lead before Rustin ran away with a 3-2 win late. Radnor hung tight with CB West — even had a goal in the net courtesy of Sam Campbefore being done in by a 73rd-minute goal. Sun Valley kept things close with Bensalem for 68 minutes before the Owls blew things out of proportion. And Interboro got a goal via Roberto Sanchez in a 5-1 loss to West Chester Henderson.

For the girls, Haverford weathered West Chester East’s early blows, but they couldn’t keep up with the Vikings. Garnet Valley (to Pennsbury) and Interboro (to Central Bucks East) also lost.

(It’s also worth pointing out that in non-PIAA action, Kristin Burnetta and Connor Gregory continued their outstanding seasons for Agnes Irwin and Haverford School, respectively.
