For much of his two years at Archbishop Carroll, Nick Jones was being hailed as the heir apparent to the point guard spot occupied by two-time All-Delco Yosef Yacob.
It looks like that won’t be happening as multiple reports indicate that Jones, a 2015 combo guard, will be transferring to defending Class AAAA state champion Lower Merion this year. City of Basketball Love confirmed the report with Jones’ father, who cited “financial reasons” for his son’s departure from the Catholic League.
Jones should fit in well with the Aces, who were hit hard by graduation as stars like B.J. Johnson (Syracuse), Yohanny Dalembert (James Madison) and Raheem Hall (prep school) capped their careers with a state title. Jones will join Chester native JaQuan Johnson in the Lower Merion backcourt as coach Gregg Downer aims to have the Aces repeat.
Jones averaged 10.4 points per game for the Patriots last year. He drained 40 3-pointers, good enough for second on the team, and was a 71.3 percent shooter from the line. He was a second-team All-Catholic League selection.
