For the third straight year, the Aidan’s Heart Foundation will host its 5K for Aidan J. Saturday, June 15 at Kerr Park in Downingtown from 8-11:30 a.m. to raise money for awareness of heart ailments in children.
The organization, founded in 2011 by Christy and Steve Silva in honor of their son Aidan, who died in 2010 of sudden cardiac arrest, has raised over $50,000 to increase awareness of this deadly condition. Proceeds of the event provide free heart screenings for the community and go to fund the purchase of live-saving automatic external defibrillators (AEDs).
In the short existence of the organization, more than 1,000 children have been screened for heart ailments, over a dozen of whom were determined to have potentially dangerous conditions that were detected and treated. The organization has also funded the purchase of 21 AEDs and held training events for teachers and coaches. Aidan’s Heart Foundation is also behind the effort to pass Aidan’s Law (SB 606), which would require public schools in Pennsylvania to have working AEDs and appropriate training for individuals.
