Upper Darby’s Brett Caban made history when he finished fifth in the Central League singles tournament last Saturday at the Healthplex.
The junior became the second player from Upper Darby to qualify for the District One Class AAA singles tournament, according to Upper Darby coach Ken Regester.
Caban is in his second season at No. 1 singles for the Royals. Getting to the district tournament wasn’t easy. After falling in Friday’s quarterfinals, Caban had to win twice Saturday to earn a spot in the district tournament, which begins Friday at the Healthplex.
Caban, who was seeded fifth in the tournament, defeated eighth-seeded John Ferruzzi of Strath Haven, 6-3, 6-2, to get to the fifth place match, then knocked off sixth-seeded Denis Gliem of Penncrest, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8, to reach the District One Tournament. Caban opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Radnor’s Faasal Khan in the second round before falling to fourth-seeded Simon Vernier of Lower Merion, 6-2, 6-2.
“He’s a good player who really brought it out this weekend,” Regester said. “I was really proud of him.”
