Basketball picture, sure, but we’re leading with Penncrest wrestling All-Delco Joe Gartland booking a ticket into the PIAA semifinal…which he promptly won this morning. Follow Steve Lienert on Twitter tonight (@SteveLienert) as Gartland aims to become the first Delco state champion since 2001. Onto the basketball, Archbishop Carroll’s Ernest Aflakpui had to be careful with four fouls, but his big fourth quarter helped the Patriots beat Berks Catholic, 47-42, in the first round of the Class AAA tournament. Delco Christian was trying to be David to Vaux’s Goliath, and while the Knights held Cougars star Rysheed Jordan to four points, they fell, 63-42. Here’s a preview of today’s Class AAAA action. On the girls’ side, Cardinal O’Hara two-time All-Delco Shanice Johnson helped ensure that the Lions didn’t get upset like last year, this time in a 46-34 win over Methacton. O’Hara’s beloved rival, Archbishop Carroll, got a combined seven 3-pointers from Jess Carney and Lexi Stover en route to taking out Upper Dublin, 54-43. Garnet Valley, led once again by the fiery Coley Ricci, nearly engineered an upset of Wilson, but ultimately fell short, 41-34. Here’s a preview of today’s Class AAA action with Bonner-Prendergast playing the first state tournament game in school history. Cardinal O’Hara’s girls indoor track team finished fifth at the New Balance Nationals.
