Diving: Howard, Shuttleworth Central League’s best

Billy Shuttleworth entered the Central League Championships having scored as high as 225 points this season. It appears he’s peaking at the right time.

The Garnet Valley diver tallied 235.60 late Wednesday night at Centrals to claim an individual title.

Second was Ridley’s John Hickman, who scored 212.05 points. He was followed by a pair of Upper Darby divers in Dan Burns (196.85) and Tim Durante (196.50) on a low-scoring night.

Brian Layden of Springfield was fifth, followed by Marple Newtown’s Julian Farrer and Penncrest’s Brandon Davis. Colin Smith of Strath Haven rounded out the medalists.

The girls diving was billed as a battle of stars, and it lived up to that reputation. In the end, Lower Merion’s Carolyn Howard came out on top of Haverford’s Alli Butera. Howard scored 255.35 points to Butera’s total of 248.80.

Garnet Valley’s Morgan Kovatch was the only other diver to top the 200 point mark, scoring 210.05. Karly Feinberg of Marple Newtown finished fourth, followed by the Radnor duo of Julia Reichert and Nicole Cohen. Upper Darby’s Bridget Johnson and Springfield’s Leighann Shanabarger rounded out the medalists.
