Field Hockey: Interboro Hoping for Goals…Lots of ‘Em

Diane Faison is expecting a lot out of her Interboro team this year, especially on the offensive end of things.

So much so that Faison has raised the bar for the Bucs’ expectations as they try to get back to the top of the Del Val League for the first time since 2009.

“I put a challenge to them,” Faison said. “My daughter (Three-time All-Delco and 2003 Daily Times Player of the Year Arlene Lowthert is the county record-holder for goals (with 80), and I told the girls I want someone to beat it.”

It’ll be tall task for anyone on Interboro to match that mark, but the Bucs have the firepower to have a lot of different girls find the back of the cage more than a few times. Faison singled out senior Brianna Golden and sophomore Annette Helmandollar – sister of Interboro baseball All-Delco and Dickinson cornerback Mitch – as two players that she figures will cause fits for opposing defenses.

“Brianna’s really fast,” Faison said. “She showed off her speed during lacrosse season, too, and I think she’s going to have a good year. Annette did a lot last year and she should have a good season again.”

Faison brings a good blend of sophomores, juniors and seniors to the table – she also said to keep an eye on a freshman, but declined to say who – but it’s likely going to be the senior class that carries this team. Goalie Kalista Murphy is back in the cage for Interboro, and seniors Kiana Cooper (back/sweeper) and Bridgette Pappert (midfield) will be there to help Murphy keep the ball out.

Seeing the title end up on Chichester Avenue for the past two years doesn’t sit well with those in the Interboro camp. It’s not exactly breaking news that the two schools aren’t the biggest fans of the other, and the Bucs would like nothing better than to stop the Eagles’ streak at two.

“They’re ready to hopefully take the title back,” Faison said. “They’re anxious. They’re talking like they’re good to go, so I feel good about our chances. But I’ll know better after our Play Day Wednesday at Avon Grove.”
