A year ago around this time, it seemed a virtual certainty that Strath Haven’s Sharay Barnes was Texas Tech-bound.
The 6-2 middle blocker and outside hitter, who ended her junior season with All-Delco and All-State honors as part of a team that made the state tournament for the first time in school history, had Lubbock in her sights and it seemed like nothing could derail her from that.
Amazing how things can change. Tuesday, Barnes issued a verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky over the University of Cincinnati. Barnes officially visited Lexington during the final week of September and came away enamored with the idea of attending UK and playing in the Southeastern Conference.
“I love the school, I love the coaches, I just love everything about the school,” Barnes said. “Kentucky was where I wanted to be without a doubt. When I was there, I just decided that there was no doubt and that I can’t let this go past me.”
While she had an inkling that she would ultimately decide on the Wildcats, Barnes tripped to the Queen City this past weekend, and while she came away very impressed with the Bearcats and their program, she had her heart set on UK.
“I enjoyed my visit to Cincinnati,” Barnes said. “It’s a great school, but Kentucky was the right place for me.”
Check Thursday’s Daily Times for more on Barnes’ commitment, and congratulations to Sharay Barnes on her commitment and on being the first athlete to commit via the Delco HS Sports blog.
